Gaasperdammertunnel_website 1.jpg

Life-safety ventilation systems for the longest land tunnel in the Netherlands

The A9 corridor between Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam and Almere is one of the busiest routes in the Netherlands. Its reconstruction and expansion ease congestion and improve daily life for commuters. The motorway now has five lanes in each direction plus a tidal flow lane, creating smoother traffic flow and better access to the Randstad region.

The Gaasperdammertunnel is a key part of this upgrade. At 3 kilometres and with five tunnel tubes, it is the longest and widest land tunnel in the country. Routing all traffic through the semi-sunken tunnel removes traffic noise and emissions from the surrounding neighbourhoods. A new 15-hectare or 150.000 m2 park built on top of the tunnel further restores green space and enhances the local environment.

NOVENCO® ZerAx® fans - Innovating AHU concepts

On 1st January 2018, the next stage of the Ecodesign Regulation 1253/2014 for air handling units came into force. The updated requirements focus on reducing energy consumption through improved AHU optimisation, especially for non-residential systems with large air volumes.

In recent years, heat recovery has become a widely adopted method for achieving energy savings. With regulations tightening further, investments have continued to drive higher efficiency in recovery systems. Yet the fans - responsible for up to 60% of an AHU’s electrical consumption - often receive less attention.

The strengthened Ecodesign limits for specific fan power (SFPlimit) will reshape how future AHU concepts are designed. High-efficiency fan technologies such as NOVENCO’s ZerAx fans will play a central role, helping systems meet new performance thresholds while delivering significant long-term energy reductions.

Sima Power Station_website.jpg

Water powered by NOVENCO® ZerAx® Total energy retrofit of Norwegian Sima Power Station

Hydropower uses the force of falling or fast-moving water to produce electricity. It is one of the most cost-efficient renewable energy sources and, unlike coal or gas plants, hydropower stations consume no water during operation.

NOVENCO Building & Industry has supplied and installed nine high-efficiency ZerAx fans as part of a full energy-retrofit of the Sima Power Station. The fans ventilate all tunnels and work areas inside the mountain and remove the heat generated by the power house, transformers and generator sections. They secure reliable airflows, improve working conditions and contribute to the long-term energy performance of the station.

CS gruppen – NOVENCO® ZerAx® fan delivers reliable energy savings at –30 °C

The Danish logistics company CS Gruppen A/S manages daily distribution for the national food industry. Its freezer facilities are located across Denmark, and from the southern hub in Padborg alone the company ships 250–300 tons of food every day. In total, this equals 200,000 pallets per year.

Part of the operation is the freezing of fresh meat at –30 °C and storage of it at –18 °C until it leaves the site in freezer trucks and containers.

The company freezes up to 1,800 tons a day which requires a substantial and stable energy supply to keep production running in order to meet customers’ demands without interruption.

Carlsberg upgrades 1970s ventilation with high-efficiency NOVENCO® ZerAx® fans

Carlsberg Group aims to cut energy use and lower CO2 emissions across its production sites. At the Fredericia brewery, ventilation accounts for 23% of the total energy consumption. Every kWh saved reduces CO2 emissions and generates an additional 0.04 GBP per kWh in CO2 sales.

The decision to replace the original 1970s fans with new high-efficiency ZerAx fans was therefore driven primarily by financial savings. The old units had never been fine-tuned and operated at full capacity around the clock in very humid conditions in one of the 24/7 bottling halls. By switching to ZerAx fan technology, Carlsberg gains a modern, energy-efficient solution that lowers operating costs and supports the company’s climate goals.

Odense University Hospital – CO2 reduction and energy savings of more than 50%

Odense University Hospital has one of the largest heated floor areas in the Danish healthcare sector, covering 280,000 m2. The annual energy consumption for electricity, water, and heating exceeds 100 million Danish kroner or approx. 13 million Euros. Ventilation accounts for the largest share of this consumption, making it a key target for efficiency improvements.

The hospital has now completed the first stage of its fan replacement programme. So far, 35 outdated fans have been replaced with new, energy-efficient units from NOVENCO. The new fans operate alongside the ventilation systems from the 1950s and 1960s, yet the improvements have been immediate and significant. Energy savings have already surpassed 50%, demonstrating the impact of modern fan technology even in legacy installations.
