About the project
Before its transformation, the old Westgate Centre was over 40 years old and stood in the centre of Oxford, one of England’s most historic cities and home to the renowned 12th-century university.
Today, Westgate Oxford is a modern 800,000 square-foot or approx. 74,000 m2 retail and leisure destination. It features a three-storey shopping centre, a 1,000-space underground car park and 61 new residential properties.
The development also includes more than 100 stores, 25 restaurants and cafés, a boutique cinema, rooftop terrace dining and generous public spaces. The result is a vibrant and inspiring destination unlike any other in the region.
Two levels of safety
For this major redevelopment NOVENCO Building & Industry designed, supplied, installed and commissioned the smoke ventilation systems for the entire complex. This includes mechanical smoke clearance for the two-level underground car park, loading bay and service yard. All natural and mechanical AOV stair systems also formed part of NOVENCO Building & Industry’s delivery scope.
Equipment delivery
For the car park ventilation system, NOVENCO Building & Industry supplied 40 jet fans and two large extract shafts. The jet fans include a mix of AUT400 units and slimline CGF500 units for areas with restricted height.
The extract shafts are equipped with two ACN1400 and two ACN1600 smoke extract fans, providing a combined extract rate of more than 0.5 million m3/h. Large silencer packs, designed and manufactured within the SCHAKO Group, are integrated to achieve significant noise reduction.
The entire system is controlled by a combined CO and NOx detection system.
Separate smoke clearance and gas detection systems were installed for the service yard and loading bay. The extract fans for the loading bay were delivered in pre-assembled acoustic frames.
In total, 16 smoke shaft systems were installed in the firefighting lobbies and escape stairs.
All systems are connected via a site-wide network that provides clear status indication at the management suite. This ensures user-friendly operation and fast detection or activation when needed.
Together, the NOVENCO Building & Industry solutions ensure a high level of smoke ventilation performance, protecting visitors and users in the event of fires.
