Carlsberg upgrades 1970s ventilation with high-efficiency NOVENCO® ZerAx® fans

The Carlsberg Group aims to cut energy use to reduce CO2 emissions and lower operating costs. Ventilation accounts for 23% of the total energy consumption at the Fredericia brewery. Each saved kWh also contributes 0.04 GBP in CO2 credit sales. With these financial drivers, Carlsberg chose to replace its 1970s fans with new high-efficiency ZerAx fans from NOVENCO.

Promised savings achieved

Carlsberg’s energy consultant Bjarne Pedersen reports that the energy savings are already being realised, even before system optimisation is completed.

Because ZerAx calculations are based on frequency control, the total savings will exceed the fan-only savings.

Citat

We expect the fans to lead to cost reductions of 30%. The rest will come from improved control of our ventilation system. A tong test ammeter confirms that we are close to the expected savings.

Budget data

  • Pre-upgrade consumption of old system: 890,400 kWh/year
  • Theoretical consumption with fan upgrade: 451,528 kWh/year
  • Savings due to upgrade: 438,872 kWh/year

The installation contractor has issued an official energy-savings certificate.

ROI of 2 years

The return on investment for consultancy, system replacement, and new fans is 2.2 years. The system upgrade is one of approx. 20 at the brewery with a full replacement programme that will total several millions GBP. The replacement occurs in phases where each installation must achieve payback within two years. Savings for the first system alone is expected to be around 49,000 GBP/year.

Carlsberg also values improved working conditions. Although the bottling hall is noisy, the new fans clearly move more air with far less noticeable sound.

Facts

  • Up to 52% lower energy consumption
  • 43% reduced energy consumption across all units
  • CO2 reduction of 161 tons/year
