Heinenoord Tunnel meets Dutch safety standards

Pure competence in air.

The renovation programme addressed multiple technical installations whilst implementing a central escape passage between the two tunnel tubes. This created distinct engineering requirements:

  • Longitudinal smoke control for tunnel tubes during emergency scenarios
  • Escape route pressurisation to prevent smoke infiltration
  • Integration capability with 1969-era infrastructure
  • Energy-efficient operation during normal conditions

Dual-system design addresses distinct requirements

The dual-system configuration addressed separate safety functions. Tunnel tubes required effective smoke control to maintain tenable conditions during evacuation. The escape passage required positive pressurisation to prevent smoke ingress, ensuring a protected evacuation route.

Specifications demanded reliable performance under emergency conditions whilst integrating with renovated control systems. Equipment selection prioritised compatibility with existing infrastructure and compliance with Dutch safety standards.

Jet fans and pressurisation equipment

NOVENCO® Building & Industry supplied 19 AUR-1250 jet fans for longitudinal smoke control:

  • Fan type: AUR-1250 (NovAx™ platform)
  • Motor power: 55 kW per unit
  • Installation: Direct ceiling mount
  • Function: Longitudinal airflow without ductwork

The jet fan configuration reduces installation complexity whilst simplifying maintenance access. Each unit mounts to the tunnel ceiling, enabling straightforward periodic inspection and service.

The pressurisation specification comprised four fans delivering positive pressure to the escape passage:

  • Primary fans: 2× AZN-1250 (55 kW motors)
  • Secondary fans: 2× AZL-1000 (30 kW motors)
  • Platform: ZerAx® range
  • Function: Prevent smoke infiltration from tunnel tubes

This configuration maintains positive pressure throughout the escape tunnel, ensuring compliance with Dutch safety regulations for protected evacuation routes.

Installation validated through comprehensive testing

NOVENCO designed, supplied and commissioned both ventilation systems, coordinating installation with the tunnel's renovated electrical and control infrastructure. The programme integrated with other trades to minimise schedule disruption.

Commissioning procedures validated system performance:

  • Airflow verification confirmed distribution throughout tunnel tubes
  • Pressure differential testing validated escape route pressurisation
  • Control system integration verified automated response sequences
  • Regulatory acceptance confirmed compliance with Rijkswaterstaat requirements

Compliant ventilation across dual systems

The completed installation delivers compliant ventilation across both safety functions. The jet fan system provides effective smoke control throughout tunnel tubes. The pressurisation system maintains protected conditions in the escape passage.

The renovation extends operational life whilst meeting current safety standards. Ventilation systems operate efficiently during normal conditions and respond reliably in emergency scenarios.

The renovation of the Heinenoord Tunnel was a complex project with strict safety and reliability requirements. NOVENCO's ventilation solutions have been essential in meeting these goals. The tunnel jet fans provide reliable ventilation and smoke control, and the pressurisation system ensures a safe evacuation route. With NOVENCO's support, we can now operate the tunnel with confidence that it meets the highest safety standards and will serve road users reliably for many years to come.

Contemporary safety standards achieved

The Heinenoord Tunnel operates to contemporary safety standards following the 2023-2024 renovation. The dual ventilation approach addresses tunnel smoke control and escape route pressurisation, satisfying regulatory requirements established by Rijkswaterstaat.

The installation demonstrates capability in complex infrastructure projects requiring integration with existing structures. The project provides reference data for tunnel renovation specifications requiring compliant ventilation systems and retrofit integration with legacy infrastructure.
