ZerAx delivers 30% energy reduction at Sima

Underground power station retrofits challenge installation teams with tight deadlines and complex access requirements. NOVENCO delivered 9 high-efficiency ZerAx® fans to Norway's second largest hydro-electric facility, achieving 30% energy reduction without production downtime.

The main hall with dimensions of 200 m length, 20 m width, and 40 m height, operating at 1,120 MW capacity, demanded efficient renewable energy ventilation solutions without production interruption.

Installation completed without production downtime

Outdated ventilation systems increase operational costs and maintenance complexity. The proven installation approach delivered 30% reduction in energy consumption whilst maintaining continuous facility operation, demonstrating that even extreme underground environments can achieve significant efficiency gains without service interruption.

Installation teams from NOVENCO Building & Industry (NBI) deployed 9 high-efficiency ZerAx® fans throughout the facility. The systems address the facility's critical ventilation requirements:

  • Complete tunnel ventilation for all underground access routes
  • Transformer cooling to maintain optimal operating temperatures
  • Heat extraction from generator areas during peak operation
  • Energy efficient performance reducing CO2 emissions

The retrofit replaced ageing equipment with modern energy consumption controls that installation teams can commission quickly without specialised training. This approach reduces both implementation time and ongoing operational complexity.

The ventilation system comprises two integrated configurations designed to meet the facility's demanding operational requirements. The fresh air supply system combines 2 ZerAx® AZN 1600 units for primary intake with 2 ZerAx® AZN 1000 axial flow fans for secondary zones, delivering a total capacity of 395,000 m³/h airflow.

The heat extraction systems address the facility's thermal management needs across multiple zones. Three ZerAx® AZN 1600 units handle transformer areas, whilst a single AZN 1120 provides generator cooling and an AZN 1000 manages auxiliary extraction, combining for 500,000 m³/h exhaust capacity.

Factory-installed components reduce site complexity

All ZerAx® units include factory-installed inlet cones and diffusers, which reduces on-site assembly requirements. Component delivery utilised modular shipping to accommodate narrow tunnel access points and minimise installation time, because the 700-metre underground location demanded efficient logistics planning.
